Zbog klizišta zemlje uzrokovanog monsunskim kišama u južnom i središnjem dijelu Šri Lanke poginulo je između 100 i 300 osoba, a sve je manje nade za pronalaskom preživjelih, izvjestili su predstavnici Vlade za posjeta ugroženom području.
U katastrofi je zakopano više od 100 ljudi koji su bili izvan svojih domova i koji nisu poslušali upozorenja.

Inače, seljaci koji žive na tom području upozoreni su 2005. i 2012. da se zbog opasnosti od klizišta isele, ali mnogi to nisu poslušali, izjavio je ministar Amaraweera.

Ljudi koji žive u na tom brdovitom području uglavnom su indijskog podrijetla, potomci su radnika koji su u Sri Lanku došli za vrijeme britanske vlasti kao jeftina radna snaga na plantažama čaja i kave.
