U nedjeljnoj erupciji vulkana Fuego u Gvatemali poginulo je 99 osoba, a 197 ih je nestalo, najnoviji su podaci vlasti. Nažalost, gotovo svi su uvjereni da će broj mrtvih narasti na 300 budući da je nemoguće da je itko preživio divovski oblak vrućeg dima i tone pepela koje su doslovce progutale sela ispod podivljalog vulkana.

Danas su procurile i satelitske snimke područja oko vulkana i one najbolje govore o razmjerima katastrofe koja se desila u Gvatemali. Nekad prekrasni kanjoni, livade i poljoprivredna zemljišta pretvorila su se u sive hrpe pepela i blata. Baš ništa nije ostalo ni od sela u podnožju planine.

Ljude koji su živi spaljeni teško je i identificirati. Vlasti su objavile da je identificirano tek 28 osoba koji su izgubile život nakon erupcije.

Poljoprivrednik Alfonso Catillo (33) rekao je da je njegovo selo San Miguel Los Lotes nestalo s lica zemlje nakon što ga je progutalo 'more kipućeg blata'.

- Moje selo je nestalo za tri-četiri minute.

Kaže da se njegova obitelj zatvorila u kuću koja se počela zagrijavati poput bojlera. Budući da je vrućina vrlo brzo postala neizdrživa, cijela obitelj se popela na krov kuće odakle su iz izbavili spasitelji.

- Bojim se da se nikada nećemo vratiti kući. Moja djeca kažu da će radije živjeti na ulici...
